Get to know Specialty Athletic Training

Do you have those moments where you see something super cool and need to find out more? That moment for me recently was when I saw Specialty Athletic Training’s Instagram.

Ryan Lockard, Founder and Head Trainer, gives us more info on Specialty Athletic Training by answering all the questions I had (thank you Ryan!). Reading his answers was very enjoyable and I hope it’s the same experience for you 😉

1. When was Specialty Athletic Training founded? How did it get it’s start? & 2. What inspired you to go into training individuals with disabilities?

For the back story of Specialty Athletic Training and the inspiration, please visit our blog (http://www.specialtyathletictraining.com/blog) to view podcasts, magazine articles, and news coverage. One that will answer most questions can be found at: http://www.specialtyathletictraining.com/blog/physical-fitness-for-all-abilities

I founded Specialty Athletic Training on June 12, 2012.

3. On Instagram, I see folks with personal trainers or working out in groups. What are the training sessions like? Are they tailored to each individual or group?
First, whether it’s in a group setting or private session, it’s our aim to make workout fun for our clients. They should always leave with a smile on their face looking forward to their next visit.

We do offer group and individual sessions. However, the individual sessions are more private and customized to the client’s goals and needs. Everyone is doing the same exercises during the group workouts, but may be doing different progressions to make it easier or more challenging based on their ability.

4. How does someone join Specialty Athletic Training?
Contact us. Although the facilities that we train at are located in Oregon and Washington, we do offer online programming as well. People can reach us via social media @specialtyathletictraining (Instagram & Facebook), email (info@specialtyathletictraining.com) , or by phone (503.863.0512).

5. What background/experience do the personal trainers have?
The most important thing that I look for when hiring a trainer is a person with a big heart and a passion for fitness. Their heart has to be in the right place and they have to want to work with this population for the right reasons, as well as have their own personal passion of living a healthy lifestyle. That is more important to me than any certification. I can teach them the exercise progressions and the teaching methods to use. All of my Lead Trainers that design the exercise programs are Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists (NSCA), which is the gold standard in the field of strength training.

6. Do you train individuals of all ages?
All ages. To date our youngest client has been 3 years old and our oldest has been 63 years old.

7. Lastly, what do you enjoy most about your work?
There’s that saying, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” That’s how I feel. I thoroughly enjoy working with our clients and seeing their self-confidence and self-esteem soar and carry over into other aspects of their lives.
